Boss DS-1 Distortion with Carbon Film Resistors & Premium Caps

Project: Comet (Boss DS-1 Distortion)
Variant: Keeley Diode Mod + 2 OpAmps

Build description

This is a follow up to my first Comet build. This build comprise parts for the MODERN VALUES option but I used 5% carbon film resistors this time in combination with premium capacitors like my first build. My main purpose for this build was to compare the sound to my first build where I used 1% metal film resistors. And, like my first Comet build, I installed all the mods except the Big Muff mod.

Clipping Diodes: two IN4148 & two (3mm) diffused RED LEDs

OpAmp tested & installed: 1 at first then 2 OPA2134PA together

Equipment used: Marshall JVM 205H head / Marshall 1960A cab / 1997 Fender Strat Ultra with Seymour Duncan “Everything Axe” set of stacked humbuckers. Only Comet is connected.

This build pretty much sound like the original Boss DS-1 with the popular mods. It has definitely a warmer sound attributed to the use of carbon film “mojo” resistors. The distortion clearly sounds more compressed but the electrical interference (hiss) is a little bit louder than my first build.

I also experimented with 2 same OpAmps using Monte Allum’s adaptors and the tone incredibly sounded fuller & with almost infinite sustain.

I will be building my 3rd & final Comet very soon after a little more research & test with parts & I will post it here.

AION Comet PCBs rock!! They’re very compact, has extremely well-thought of features & very easy & fun to build.

COMET: BOSS DS-1 DISTORTION WITH PREMIUM PARTS

Project: Comet (Boss DS-1 Distortion)
Variant: Keeley Diode Mod

Build description

This build comprise parts for the MODERN VALUES option.

Clipping Diodes: two IN4148 & two (3mm) diffused RED LEDs

For the resistors, I used metal-film throughout. I chose Panasonic stacked metal-film & Cornell Dubilier mica caps. I installed solid polymer low ESR caps in C14 & C15. 2 box film caps were also installed.

NOTE: Just in case you want to install the plastic Re ‘An brand input/output jacks (like I did): FYI those are switched ones….meaning the lugs are connected to the circuit ONLY if a guitar plug is fully inserted to the jacks. You have to wire the SLEEVE of the output jack to ground too in order to get rid of that dreaded hum.

OpAmp TEST:

Equipment used: Marshall JVM 205H head / Marshall 1960A cab / 1997 Fender Strat Ultra with Seymour Duncan “Everything Axe” set of stacked humbuckers. Only Comet is connected.

JRC4558D – Very short, harsh and shrill distotrion. Extremely untweakable! Definitely not for this build.

OPA2134PA – Good, clear & clean tweakable tone. Shrill tone was gone.

NE5532P – The best! Very warm & long distortion. Just a little bit of tone control needed.

COMET (3RD VARIANT)

Project: Comet (Boss DS-1 Distortion)
Variant: VINTAGE VALUES with MODERN IC

Build description

This is my 3rd Comet build for the sake of comparison between variants & “mojo” parts. This comprise parts for the VINTAGE VALUES option.

Clipping Diodes: two 1N914 for the 1st clipping set & two 1914 in series with two BAT41 for the 2nd switchable clipping set

I used metal-film resistors for this build. I chose Panasonic stacked metal-film & Cornell Dubilier mica caps. I also installed Panasonic solid polymer & low ESR electros

OpAmps: I installed a “Toshiba TA7136P” which I purchased thru eBay. Unfortunately, the ones I got sounded like fake ICs. My build sounded “farthy”. Not a distortion nor an OD at all. I unsoldered it & proceeded to install the socket for IC2 and its required diode & resistor then Inserted the ever-reliable OPA2134.

So, this project is now a VINTAGE VALUE option with a MODERN OpAmp.

Lastly, I installed Small Bear’s light plate for a very cool look.

THE TEST:
Equipment used: Marshall JVM 205H head / Marshall 1960A cab / 1997 Fender Strat Ultra with Seymour Duncan “Everything Axe” set of stacked humbuckers. Only Comet is connected.

I had excellent results for this combination of Vintage & Modern values option. IMHO, this is better than my second buid. Toggling between the 2 clipping sets doesn’t result in one set louder than the other but rather a bass & treble difference which is very noticeable.

I got lots of those TA7136P ICs if you wanna try it on your Comet!
