Pre-Screamer Overdrive

Project: Cumulus (Ibanez OD-855 Overdrive)

Build description

This is a cool little OD that sounds like the tube screamer it predated as well as the Distortion + it apparently was based on. Less midrange and more crunch than a TS. Doesn’t sound exactly like a Distortion + either. Stock diodes are germanium while the other clipping option uses 1N914’s. Definitely worth checking out!

Marquee Moon (Television Tribute)

Project: Cumulus (Ibanez OD-855 Overdrive)

Build description

This is my first Aion build, and it definitely won’t be my last! It went together quite easily despite some minor drilling goofs. This is a great-sounding drive. Somehow the sound reminds me of some live Television tracks from the Marquee Moon days, hence the name. I used some o.g. germanium 1n60 for the stock diodes and an RC4558P for the IC. For the second clipping option, I used a 3mm red LED on one side and two 1n4148s on the other. It sounds very “boutique” and touch-sensitive on this setting–very lively and clean until you dig in, then you get some very nasty, mismatched-tube-like clipping. One thing I really like about this circuit is that while it behaves like a Distortion+ and gets more treble as you crank the gain, the tone knob is highly interactive and really lets you control the sizzle. I guess it kind of sits midway between a TS and D+, but preserves bass better than either of those.
