Sonic Stomp Tribute

Project: Lumin (BBE Sonic Maximizer)

Build description

I built this pretty much exactly as per the Lumin specs.

I used the recommended capacitor selections for the High and Low Frequency switches, and the Midrange knob. I also happened to have three Burr Brown OPA2134s handy for the dual op-amps.

I designed the enclosure artwork as a hybrid of all of the BBE versions so it retained a bit of the “look” I was after.

Sound-wise, at the moment I have the Contour at about 2 o’clock, the Process at about 12 o’clock, and the Midrange at 12 o’clock. I’m still trying the different switch selections – they make subtle but noticeable changes depending on pickups and drive settings.

I place it last in my amp’s effects loop after all of the modulation pedals. Compression, drive and boost are floor mounted leading into the amp so the Sonic Stomp affects the entire signal chain.

I like the extra clarity the pedal provides and the punch in the bottom end. These are EQ changes I couldn’t get from my amp’s tone stack. Could an EQ pedal do the same? Maybe. But, there is that “something” about the sound that this pedal produces that I’m liking right now.

Modifications or part substitutions

Centre-detent 50kB Midrange pot to make it easier to select the stock position.

My Sonic Stomp is now in the trash.

Project: Lumin (BBE Sonic Maximizer)

Build description

Great build! I made 2 of these, One for myself and one for a bass player friend. Used the suggested parts for the “lower than 50Hz” mod. I lowered my Hi freq a bit too. Outstanding on every level. Both myself and my friend have sold off the BBEs. Both of us use the Rack version. Amazing gear. The stomp box was crap for a 5 string bass. This is the solution. The Mid range control is more of a bonus! Very highly recommended! Used OPA op-amps too. Thank-you for a great design and quality ckt board!

Modifications or part substitutions

Subbed in the recommended caps for lower than 50Hz, and lower than 10Khz. Using pedal on 5 String bass.

Sonic

Project: Lumin (BBE Sonic Maximizer)
Variant: Standard build

This really is a usefull stompbox! It sounds amazing!
This time I used a waterslide which gave me more detail.
I did have a little trouble fitting c1, c2, c4 and cx1 so close together and soldering the highfreq switch below. Mainly because I used bigger caps for c2 and c4.

Dirt Brush

Project: Lumin (BBE Sonic Maximizer)
Variant: Sonic Stomp with mid control and hi/low shift

Build description

Second whack at this type of circuit. I built the two-knob version of it first and then saw this one and had to try it. This is a must-have fuzz companion. It gently brushes all the knots and tangles from that matted mess of bed head distortion and delivers it in crisp tones and creamy goodness that even Skippy would envy. The added controls just offer more sculpting capability for your dirt sound. Excellent project.

(My decal is crappy, I admit it)

Build description

This is a very cool pedal. The description of “lifting a blanket off the cabinet” is a very accurate description. This could be that “secret weapon” you’ve been looking for!

I bought a couple of these PCBs to use one as a pedal as a test for the EQ section of a hybrid solid-state/tube amp build. I like to repurpose non-functioning mass-production tube amps like the Fender Superchamp XD and X2 into something useful when the non-replaceable DSP board goes bad.

I really like the pedal a lot! It does great things to the highs especially but I think I like the Prism PCB better for the hybrid amp purposes. I am going to leave this one in pedal form as the last pedal in my chain and build the second PCB into pedal form and maybe give it to either my harp player or other guitarist in my band. I think it might sound pleasing on harp, giving his tone some clarity and “cut” on stage.

No eye-candy here… it looks like a pedal with no paint and sharpie labels with mismatched knobs picked from whatever I had left over from other pedal and amp projects… you know… the “I threw this together on my kitchen table one evening” DIY look 😉
