Power Trio Fuzz

Project: Phobos (Tonebender Mk III)
Variant: Tonebender MKIII

Build description

I always wanted to know how a Tonebender MKIII sounded like, so I just built it! I used Telefunken AC116 germanium transistor. The PCB is very nice, and it was a lot of fun to make. Kudos for the very detailed build doc with all the infos needed to properly bias the transistors !

MARTIAN FUZZ

Project: Phobos (Tonebender Mk III)
Variant: COLOURSOUND TONE BENDER MARK III

Build description

RESISTORS: All 1% metal film – No value substitution at all.

CAPACITORS: A mix of solid polymers, aluminum electros, MLCCs, CDE silver micas & box caps

GE TRANNIES: Mullard matched set

VARIANT: COLOURSOUND TONE BENDER MARK III

OVERALL, the project was easy except that this was my first build using Germanium trannies. Luckily, the guy who sold those “miniaturized water tanks” walked me through the proper connections for his color-coded matched set. I put labels on the Mullards to make sure that I remember to stick ‘em where they were supposed to be.

TEST RESULTS: I played through a DIY Fuzz Face before but Phobos just sounds different. I can’t compare its sonic qualities to any of my distortions. It just sounds interesting. I have to listen more to this pedal.

What brand of Fuzz pedals do you guys use? Buy & build the Phobos Fuzz. It sounds very interesting to me. It may even sound more interesting to you. Just one request: Please tell us about your build(s) so we will learn from each other’s DIY experiences on the projects. Thanks!
